The Superior Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (ISMM) of Moa, which began its academic activity on November 1, 1976 and since 1999 proudly bears the name of the "Dr. Antonio Núñez Jiménez" Superior Institute of Mining and Metallurgy of Moa, stands as an important link in the development of the Cuban Nickel Industry.

It is recognized as a leading center at national level for the teaching of geological sciences, mining and metallurgy. In the House of Higher Studies, it also offers courses in Electrical, Mechanical and Computer Engineering, and bachelor's degrees in Accounting and Finance and Information Sciences. It has a wide range of laboratories, Student and Academic Residence, Scientific-Technical Information Center, Geology Museum, sports and cultural areas, among others. It has the scientific magazine "Mining & Geology" and the student scientific magazine "Science & Future". The development achieved in the University Extension is nationally recognized.

The institution is responsible for the comprehensive training and continuous improvement of professionals, the development of scientific research, technological innovation and knowledge management in the branches taught, to contribute efficiently and rationally to the improvement of higher education, to the continuous improvement of the Cuban nickel industry, to the sustainable economic, cultural and social development of the mining and metallurgical communities.
